APPROVED MINUTES OF THE REGULAR MEETING
OF THE KENTWOOD CITY COMMISSION
HELD JULY 5, 2016
Mayor Stephen Kepley called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.
Commissioner Brown led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag.
Reverend Garry Cruce, New Hope Free Methodist Church gave the invocation.
Roll Call: Present: Commissioners: Betsy Artz, Michael W. Brown, Robert Coughlin, Jerry DeMaagd, Steve Redmond and Mayor Stephen Kepley.
Motion by DeMaagd, seconded by Artz, to excuse Commissioner Haas with prior notification.
Staff Present: City Engineer Tim Bradshaw, Finance Director Tom Chase, Police Chief Tom Hillen, City Clerk Dan Kasunic, Fire Chief Brent Looman, Assistant Finance Director Lorna Nenciarini, Deputy Administrator Mark Rambo, Community Development Director Terry Schweitzer, Fire Department Administrative Assistant Nancy Shane, City Attorney Jeffrey Sluggett and DPW Supervisor Jim Wolford
Six (6) citizens and members of the news media attended the meeting.
Motion by Artz, seconded by Redmond, to approve the agenda
with the following addenda: add 7 (c) sale of City-owned property and 7(d) Commission Chambers display installation.
ACKNOWLEDGE VISITORS AND NON-AGENDA ITEMS:
State Representative Yonker provided an update of action of the State Legislature and noted he is a candidate for Drain Commissioner.
(All items under this section are considered to be routine and will be enacted by one motion with no discussion. If discussion is desired by a Commission member, that member may request removal of an item from the Consent Agenda.)
Motion by DeMaagd, seconded by Brown, to approve the Consent Agenda as follows:
- Receive and file minutes of the Committee of the Whole Meeting held on June 21, 2016.
- Payables for the City totaling $912,253.21
- Approve sale of City-Owned vacant property located at 424-44th and 4406 Madison Avenue to adjacent property owners at a price of $500.00 per parcel, and authorize the Mayor to take all steps necessary to complete the transactions.
- Approve the installation of mechanical lifts at a cost of $17,800.00 with work completed by Central Interconnect.
Roll Call Vote: Yeas: All. Nays: None. Absent: Haas.
Motion by Artz, seconded by Brown, to approve the minutes
of the June 21, 2016 City Commission Meeting.
PRESENTATIONS AND PROCLAMATIONS:
GRAND RAPIDS PUBLIC MUSEUM AND JOHN BALL ZOO PRESENTATION.
John Ball Zoo representative Dale Robertson and Grand Rapids Museum representative Peter D’Arienzo spoke on the proposed millage on the November ballot and the need for a stable income.
COMMENTS OF COMMISSIONERS AND MAYOR:
Commissioner DeMaagd-Expressed his desire to have a veteran’s memorial placed at the Pine Hill Cemetery. He requested a sign be placed at Pinewood Park to avoid confusion regarding one shelter can be reserved and the other shelter can not be reserved.
Commissioner Redmond-Spoke on how well run the July 4th
Mayor Kepley-Spoke of the change to the parade route and the reason for the change. He thanked everyone for their help with a special thanks to volunteers, DPW workers, Police and Fire Departments and Parks & Recreation Department. He reminded everyone of next year’s celebration being the City’s fiftieth anniversary and asked for input and ideas.
